癌症，這個「萬病之王」，已連續三十二年成為國人第一大死因，每一年就新增九萬多名病患，超過四分之一的人死於癌症，每十一分四十四秒，就有一人死於癌症。
這些數字教人沉重！癌症的可怕在於，它不容易早期發現，一旦發現了，以現有療法，很難將其斬草除根，尤其是目前使用最廣泛的化療，所產生的副作用，常讓病人極為痛苦。
「每次要去做化療，我就感到非常害怕，好像要進入地獄一般！」曾經，一位罹患癌症的友人這麼跟我形容化療的痛苦。
當然，化療還是有許多治癒的成功經驗，但是，癌症的高復發率和高死亡率，仍令醫界十分棘手，科學家們也無不以找到根治癌症的療法為首要目標。
《今周刊》在近二、三年內陸續做過三次有關癌症的封面故事，對於這個惡疾，投注非常多的研究與報導，也因此，當六月中，唐獎將首屆生醫獎頒給兩位研究癌症治療的科學家時，我們很自然地開始研讀他們的資料，這一讀才發現，人類癌症治療正進入劃時代的關鍵突破點。
